The Qualifying exams in music theory comprise a written part and an oral part. The written part consists of a written examination lasting 60 minutes. The first 30 minutes of this written exam are devoted to ear training tasks. In the second 30 minutes, tasks on music theory must be completed. Sample tasks can be found in the PDF file under the FAQ item "Qualifying exams music theory exam classical music".
The oral examination lasts 10 minutes. It tests sight-singing (singing a given melody excerpt and spontaneously performing this melody to the end), intervals (narrow and wide range), chords (triads, seventh chords), short cadences/harmony sequences and the analysis of a short excerpt from a work (form and harmony). -

For all applicants, a fee of €50.00 is due for the first application via the online portal and €30.00 for each subsequent application via the online portal.
The fee for the Qualifying exam must be paid by credit card via the online portal at the time of application and is non-refundable (§ 5 Gebühren- und Entgeltsatzung der Nuremberg University of Music - GebEntgS).

No, the language certificate must be presented at the required level at the time of enrolment . Enrolment is not possible without this certificate.

For Bachelor's, Master's and Master Class programmes:
- Only language certificates from certified educational institutions that correspond to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) in German are recognised.
- Proof of language proficiency at the required level must be presented for enrolment . Enrolment is not possible without such proof.
- The following proof of the language skills required for the respective courses must be submitted:
Artistic Artistic-educational Bachelor B2 C1 Master B1
B2 (only for MA Accompaniment for singers)
C1 Master Class B1 - - Language certificates from private language institutes are not recognised.
- Certificates of participation in language courses are not sufficient. A language test must have been taken.
- The language test must be taken in the four categories of listening, reading, writing and speaking.
- Applicants who, at the time of enrolment, have obtained a German-language school-leaving certificate in German-speaking Europe or have completed a German Abitur at a German school abroad are exempt from submitting proof of language proficiency.
Only relevant for the Master's programme Interdisciplinary Music Research:
- Submission of a Language certificate with at least level B2
- Only language certificates from certified educational institutions that correspond to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) in English are recognised.

All students in Germany require a certificate from a statutory German health insurance company confirming their insurance status or non-insurance obligation for enrolment.
Please request this from your or a German statutory health insurance company of your choice for a digital notification of your insurance status or non-insurance obligation.
A certificate from a private health insurance company or presentation of an insurance card is not sufficient.
If you would like to be exempted from compulsory insurance, you will need to provide proof of this.
