FAQs on the Qualifying exam and enrolment

  • Preparatory courses for the Theoretical Qualifying Examination: Here you can find information about the courses offered by the Bayerischer Musikrat. Find the preparation courses for Nürnberg (in German) here.

  • The qualifying examination in music theory consists of a written and an oral part. The written part consists of a 60-minute written examination. The first 30 minutes of this written examination are devoted to ear training tasks. The second 30 minutes are devoted to music theory questions. Sample questions (in German) can be found here.
    The oral exam lasts 10 minutes. It tests sight-singing (singing a given melody excerpt and performing it spontaneously to the end), intervals (narrow and wide range), chords (triads, seventh chords), short cadences/harmony sequences and analysis of a short excerpt from a work (form and harmony).

  • All applicants must pay a fee of €50.00 for the first application via the online portal and €30.00 for each subsequent application via the online portal.

    The fee for the qualifying exam must be paid by credit card via the online portal at the time of application and is non-refundable (§ 5 Gebühren- und Entgeltordnung der Hochschule für Musik Nürnberg, Fee and Charging Regulations of the Nuremberg University of Music - GebEntgS).

  • Yes, you can apply for more than one degree programme and we welcome all application.

  • Applications for the Gifted and Talented Programme must also be submitted via the online portal.

  • No, the language certificate must be presented at the time of enrolment at the required level. Enrolment is not possible without this certificate.

  • For Bachelor's, Master's and Master Class programmes:

    • Only language certificates from accredited educational institutions that comply with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) in German will be accepted.
    • The certificate at the required level must be provided at the time of enrolment. Without such certificate, enrolment is not possible.
    • The following language certificate is required for each course:

    • Language certificates from private language institutes are not recognised.
    • Certificates of attendance at language courses are not sufficient. A language test must be passed.
    • The language test must be taken in the four categories of listening, reading, writing and speaking.
    • Applicants who, at the time of enrolment, have obtained a German-language school-leaving certificate in German-speaking Europe or have completed a German Abitur at a German school abroad are exempt from submitting a certificate of language.

    Only relevant for the Masters in Interdisciplinary Music Research:

    • Submission of a language certificate of at least level B2
    • Only language certificates from accredited educational institutions that comply with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) in English will be recognised.
    • Proof of language proficiency at the required level must be provided at the time of enrolment. Enrolment is not possible without such evidence.
    • Language certificates from private language institutes will not be accepted.
    • Certificates of attendance at language courses are not sufficient. A language test must be passed.
    • The language test must be taken in the four categories of listening, reading, writing and speaking.
    • Applicants who have an English-language school-leaving qualification at the time of enrolment are exempt from the language test.
  • All students in Germany need a certificate from a German statutory health insurance company confirming their insurance status or non-insurance obligation in order to enrol.

    Please contact your German statutory health insurance company or a German statutory health insurance company of your choice for a digital notification of your insurance status or non-insurance obligation.

    A certificate from a private health insurance company or an insurance card is not sufficient.

    If you wish to be exempted from the insurance obligation, you must provide proof of this.
