News Success Prof Shirley Brill wins OPUS KLASSIK 2024

Prof. Shirley Brill with her duopartner Prof. Jonathan Aner

Clarinettist Shirley Brill, Professor at Nuremberg University of Music since 2021, has been awarded the OPUS KLASSIK prize in the "Chamber Music Recording of the Year" category for her album "Roots" with her piano partner Jonathan Aner. Congratulations!

In ROOTS, Shirley Brill has put together a collection of pieces that show a masterful integration of folk elements, radiating pride in original folk music and a healthy sense of national identity.

Hänssler Classic

The starting point for the recording of the album "Roots: Pieces in Folk Style" was a concert at which Shirley Brill performed Mieczysław Weinberg's sonata for the first time and was deeply moved by its overwhelming emotional power. Being Jewish herself, she was deeply moved by the rich folkloric klezmer elements so intensely expressed in this sonata. This experience sparked her passion for exploring the integration of national sentiments in classical music, with a particular focus on the neighbouring countries of Germany and Poland.

The award ceremony will take place at Kühlhaus Berlin on 12 October at 19:30.
