Qualifying exam

  • Main subject

    Artistic-practical exam
    Duration: 45-50 minutes
    A written programme must be brought to the examination.

    A) Organ literature

    Performance of at least three pieces from different eras or in different styles

    Assessment criteria

    • stylistically confident, differentiated, creative ability with regard to articulation, phrasing and sound (registration)
    • technical mastery and musical imagination
    • stylistic knowledge
    • creative ability
    • artistic individuality and expressiveness

    B) Organ improvisation

    • Improvisation of two smaller and one larger piece of different styles (e.g. Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Modern), compositional (e.g. counterpoint, harmonic) and formal types (suite, chorale arrangement, variation, prelude, fugue, sonata, character piece, free forms) and in different national traditions (e.g. France, Germany), whereby the contrapuntal type of composition must be included.

The Master's degree course in Organ / Organ Improvisation prepares students for a future career in which they will mainly work as freelance artists. Graduates can work in various professional fields, for example as a soloist, as a member of an ensemble or as an organist in churches.
