Qualifying exam

  • Main subject

    Artistic-practical exam
    Duration: 15-20 minutes
    A written programme must be brought to the examination.

    • Performance of three rehearsed jazz/pop standards with improvisation; different tempos and characters (e.g. Afroc-Cban, Brazilian jazz, fusion/funk, salsa) should be chosen; congas and timbales must be played
    • Performance of a rehearsed solo transcription
    • Performance of a piece from another musical genre (e.g. folklore/rumba, etude for snare drum)
    • sight-reading

    Compulsory instrumental subject

    Artistic-practical exam
    Duration: 8-12 minutes

    • Chordal accompaniment of a jazz standard (melody plus chords or voicings only)
    • II-V-I Cadenzas

    Ear training

    Written exam; duration 60 minutes

    Music theory

    written exam; duration 60 minutes
