They represent different artistic disciplines and academic fields. And they have taught at art and music academies in very different countries or worked as freelance artists: Culture Minister Ina Brandes has appointed twelve experts to the new North Rhine-Westphalia Art University Advisory Board. The members of the advisory board will evaluate the quality of the curricula at the seven art and music academies in North Rhine-Westphalia and make recommendations for the further development and improvement of the courses on offer . The commission began its work on Tuesday, 19 March 2024 with its inaugural meeting at the Ministry of Culture and Academic Science.
The new advisory board now has the following members for a period of five years
- Prof Ursula Brandstätter, former Rector of the Anton Bruckner Private University,
- Nuran David Calis, director at the Schauspiel Frankfurt theatre,
- Tony Cragg, artist and former rector of the Düsseldorf Art Academy,
- Prof Ana Dimke, President of the Braunschweig University of Art,
- Prof Susanne Gaensheimer, Director of the Kunstsammlung NRW,
- Selen Kara, co-director of Schauspiel Essen,
- Esra Küçük, Chief Executive Officer/Managing Director of the Allianz Foundation*,
- Prof Claus Pias, media theorist Leuphana University Lüneburg,
- Ben J. Riepe, freelance choreographer,
- Ilona Schmiel, Director of the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich,
- Jo Schück, cultural journalist,
- Prof Dr Martin Ullrich, musicologist at the Nuremberg University of Music.
Our art and music Universities are among the international flagships of the higher education landscape in North Rhine-Westphalia. More than 5,500 students from all over the world are currently pursuing their dream of an artistic career, whether on stage or in a studio. The members of the new advisory board will use their expertise to support the universities in consistently developing and improving their study programmes. The Advisory Board is not a supervisory body, but an advisory and expert body that supports the colleges. Over the next five years, it will advise the state government and the universities, review the quality of the study programmes and make recommendations for the establishment, design and improvement of the study programmes and for the development of the art university sector. There are currently 5,574 students enrolled at the Hochschule für Musik in Detmold, the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, the Robert-Schumann Hochschule Düsseldorf, the Folkwang University of the Arts, the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln, the Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln and the Kunstakademie Münster.
