Helmut Scheller was born in Poland on 13 October 1929 to German-speaking parents and died in Nuremberg on 2 March 2024. His impressive musical career and his commitment to church music leave an unforgettable mark.
Helmut Scheller enjoyed a varied musical education which made him a respected organist, choir director and teacher. After completing his studies in Munich and working as an assistant to Professor Georg Kempff, he served as city and deanery cantor at St Michaelis in Hof an der Saale from 1959. He later moved to St Matthew's, Erlangen, and in 1973 was appointed lecturer in organ and provisional director of the Bayreuth College of Church Music. From 1975 to 1994 he taught artistic and liturgical organ playing at the Meistersingerkonservatorium in Nuremberg and headed the organ/church music department. At the same time he worked as an organist and choir director in various churches.
Helmut Scheller's contribution to the promotion of contemporary church music was particularly noteworthy. He championed the performance of avant-garde works and organised events such as the "Deo Gloria" series, dedicated to the performance of modern music in the church.
As a teacher, Helmut Scheller was known for his methodical approach and his commitment to the education of his students. His teaching method emphasised the thorough analysis of pieces and the systematic development of playing technique and interpretation.
Helmut Scheller was particularly noted for his deep understanding and passion for the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. His contribution to the interpretation and performance of Mozart's works, especially his piano concertos, will live on in the music world for a long time to come. His passion for music and his tireless dedication will be remembered by us all.
We mourn the loss of Helmut Scheller and extend our deepest sympathy to his family and friends.
